Mexico – Day 5: Alebrijes & Guelaguetza

20 July 2026 · Klaus Demo · #mexico

Today we had to say goodbye to San José del Pacífico.

We didn't know exactly what to expect. But it exceeded everything anyway (isn't that always the way?).

So much calm, so many kind and helpful people who care deeply about their culture but are still happy to share it with us strangers, without it feeling like a sellout (for us or for them).

The alebrijes are so much better in person than in any photo. Did you end up buying one, or did the hand luggage win?

Guelaguetza timing is pure luck for most visitors. You walked into the best two weeks of the Oaxacan year without planning it.

Leaving a place that turned out better than expected is its own small grief. You wrote that part well.
