Mexico – Day 15: CUN → YYZ → AMS → home
30 July 2026 · Klaus Demo · #mexico
So, the journey home.
First a small shock at the Club Med: the taxi we had ordered simply didn't turn up. So a new one was booked at short notice. It was there within minutes, but by then a lorry had completely blocked the road because of roadworks.
At that point I got out and let off some steam. The construction workers were fairly unimpressed and said something along the lines of: that is just how it is in Mexico, and I shouldn't make such a fuss. In the end our taxi driver did find a way past with a pretty tight manoeuvre.
In Cancún everything then went off without a hitch. After that we continued via Toronto.
We were genuinely shocked at how well organised everything is there, especially compared with Mexico. We had feared the worst, because our luggage couldn't be checked through. But it went smoothly, and I had no idea how incredibly friendly Canadians are. I think this is a country I really want to come back to and explore.
The connection in Amsterdam was completely painless as well.
And then we were picked up and could finally hug our family again. ❤
Otherwise there is nothing I can add to yesterday's conclusion: what a wonderful country. We had incredibly beautiful experiences, a perfectly planned route and exactly the right mix of nature, cities, rest and adventure. Every single stop was exactly the right length.
Before the trip I had been slightly worried it might turn out like Japan back then, where we had an incredible number of stops in a very short time. This time it felt completely different.
Maybe that is partly because ChatGPT now helps you enormously with finding your way around unfamiliar countries and cities. Or maybe we have simply learned something and no longer try to cram as many things as possible into as little time as possible.
And at this point, one more heartfelt thank you to the two people who made this trip possible in the first place.

A taxi that does not turn up and then a lorry in the way is the most fitting possible end to a trip. Glad you made the connection.
CUN to YYZ to AMS is a route only an airline could love. Well survived.
